For any to live, some must die. Absolutely terrific storytelling! For those of you who are familiar with the story of the Essex, how would you like to read 100 pages of fan-fiction based on that lovely little tale? ‘Jamrach’s Menagerie’, ‘Scapegallows’ and ‘The Naming of Eliza Quinn’ are all historical adventures full of drama, romance and big characters but I don’t think there’s an awful lot more to them than that – they don’t bear a great deal of analysis.
