Evoking the cloying, sweetly rotten excesses evoked in works by Rice and Harris, this reminded me of why I love supernatural fiction so much. They are on ‘em. As the novel progresses the escalating tension between the opposing camps of the inhabitants of the Fevre Dream and the vicious, morally vacuous Damon Julian fronted group is handled deftly by the author who interjects vivid descriptions of the period setting and a broad background sketching of the times (the Civil War, slavery, pestilence and the uncertain and often perilous nature of the steamboat business) to great effect. However, it is Martin’s subverting of certain elements that we commonly associate with this genre that helps give Fevre Dream such a  mesmerizing hold on the reader. York seemed to have his shit relatively together but then reality slapped him across the face when he lost everything to Damon Julian which I have to say I did enjoy with relish. I loved how the author wrote all of the characters even that of Damon Julian. This reluctant hero is Abner Marsh, once-prosperous owner of an ill-fated steamboat fleet—who can't resist an offer from pale stranger Joshua York in 1857 St. Louis: York will finance the building of a luxurious new steamboat for Marsh to captain . It doesn't really add anything to the original, but it's well-executed and a fast enjoyment in the tradition of the old Classics Illustrated comics. The only merit with this collection, is that the setting is original, it's take on vampires isn't. George R.R. :) In general, though, this was an enjoyable read that will appeal to fans of the original book and those coming to the story for the first time. To conclude this review of sorts (I kind of blabbered most of the time), I would seriously recommend this book to whoever that would just like an entertaining read with some substance. Fevre Dream.
